Harry Clarke's 1913 pen-and-ink drawing for Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, printed as an archival art print — the Mariner with the dead albatross hung about his neck.
Clarke turns the ship into a night sky. The Mariner stands with his arms flung wide, the bird's wings fanned across his chest like a cloak, while stars, haloed faces and streaming feathers fill the black behind him and his dead shipmates lie in the corner below. It is Coleridge's "Instead of the cross, the Albatross about my neck was hung" drawn as a vision, every inch of the dark ground cut with fine white line.
Clarke (1889–1931), the Dublin stained-glass artist and illustrator, made these Mariner drawings at twenty-four, years before his Poe and Faust books made his name. The dense ornament and the black-and-white drama are already fully his.
It hangs well in a study, a library or a hallway, anywhere the detail rewards a second look. Made to order, shipped worldwide and backed by hundreds of verified customer reviews.
