Harry Clarke's 1919 plate for Poe's Morella — a husband's vision of the world going dark, with only the dead wife returning through it, printed as an archival art print.

In Poe's story a man watches his wife Morella fade, then names their newborn daughter after her — and the child grows into the mother's living copy. The caption Clarke illustrates is the narrator's own: "The Earth grew dark, and its figures passed by me, like flitting shadows, and among them all I beheld only—Morella." Clarke answers in pure black and white, with ornament and shadow doing the work colour does elsewhere.

Clarke (1889–1931), the Dublin stained-glass artist, drew twenty-four plates for Harrap's 1919 edition of Poe's Tales of Mystery and Imagination, every one in black and white. It is still the Poe many readers picture.

It hangs well in a study, a library or a hallway, anywhere the detail rewards a second look. Made to order, shipped worldwide and backed by hundreds of verified customer reviews.
