By the 1920s Lavery (1856–1941) was one of the most sought-after portrait painters in London, and pictures like this one — tall, full-length, all colour and costume — show why. It is in the collection of the Ulster Museum, Belfast (BELUM.U68), which holds one of the largest groups of his work: in 1929 Lavery gave the city of his birth thirty-four paintings, saying Belfast had built a gallery but had no pictures to put in it.
