The Hills around Glendalough, County Wicklow, in ink and wash on paper, by Christopher Machell, 1787.

Shafts of light break through a heavy grey sky and fall across the bare hills that close in around Glendalough, the valley floor pale and empty below. Machell leaves the rays as untouched paper inside the wash, the most dramatic sky in his Wicklow drawings. The sheet measures about 27 × 38 cm. This work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.

About the Artist

Christopher Machell (1747–1827) was a draughtsman who recorded the Irish countryside in the late eighteenth century, from the Wicklow glens to the Dublin demesnes and the north. His wash drawings are among the National Gallery of Ireland's best records of how those places looked.
