She holds a blue cornflower to her chest and looks sideways, out of the frame — Ford Madox Brown's The Irish Girl (1860), as an archival art print.
Brown found his model, an Irish orange seller, while looking for faces for Work, his great painting of labour and class in Victorian England. The flowers she holds are for sale; the paisley shawl wrapped round her is the kind that child workers, many of them Irish immigrants, were making. Her hair is wild, her gaze is watchful, and the flat red behind her makes the single blue flower the brightest thing in the picture.
It was painted for T. E. Plint, a Leeds stockbroker and patron of the Pre-Raphaelites, who had commissioned Work and died before it was finished. It began as one half of a pair: its companion, The English Boy, shows Brown's five-year-old son in a smock, hair brushed, a life of privilege set beside hers.
About this work
The Irish Girl was painted in 1860 by Ford Madox Brown (1821–1893), born in Calais, active in England, France, Belgium and Italy, and an associate of the Pre-Raphaelites though never a full member of the Brotherhood. Brown was not Irish; his sitter was. The original is oil on canvas laid on board, 28.6 × 27.6 cm — a small cabinet picture, made for a domestic interior — and is held by the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven (accession B1989.11, Paul Mellon Fund). This print is an open edition, made to order and shipped worldwide.

Questions about this print
Where is the original The Irish Girl by Ford Madox Brown?
It is held by the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven, Connecticut (accession B1989.11), acquired through the Paul Mellon Fund. It is oil on canvas laid on board, dated 1860, and measures 28.6 × 27.6 cm.
Who is the girl in the painting?
The Yale Center describes her as an Irish orange seller whom Brown found while looking for models for his large painting Work. The flowers she holds are for sale, and her red paisley shawl is the kind made by child workers, many of them Irish immigrants to Britain.
What does the painting show?
A young street seller in a red paisley shawl, a blue cornflower held to her chest, her eyes turned to one side against a flat red ground. It was painted as a pair with The English Boy, a portrait of Brown's five-year-old son, and the two give contrasting views of childhood.
What sizes and frames are available, and what does it cost?
The original is very nearly square, so this print is made in square formats: 30 × 30, 50 × 50 and 70 × 70 cm, unframed or framed in black, white or natural wood, and 100 × 100 cm, unframed only. The size and frame selector on this page shows the exact price of every option. Frames arrive ready to hang with shatter-resistant glazing, and the paper is archival, acid-free matte with pigment inks. Every size and price is listed on the print prices, sizes and framing page. Every print is an open edition, so nothing is numbered or withdrawn.
