The Library, Trinity College, Dublin, in graphite and wash on paper, by Christopher Machell.

Two figures sit in the shade of a great tree while the long classical range of the Library at Trinity stretches across the lawns behind, small groups walking out on the grass. Machell keeps the building pale and lets the tree carry the dark tones. The sheet measures about 18 × 26 cm. This work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.

About the Artist

Christopher Machell (1747–1827) was a draughtsman who recorded the Irish countryside in the late eighteenth century, from the Wicklow glens to the Dublin demesnes and the north. His wash drawings are among the National Gallery of Ireland's best records of how those places looked.
