A mother and her baby wrapped together in white, the child held close and kissed, light falling into a darkened room — Sir John Lavery’s The Mother.

There are two sitters in its history. Lavery began it in 1909 as a profile study of Mary Auras, his friend and favourite model — the woman on The Green Sofa — and by 1924 had painted it into a picture of his daughter Eileen with her own child. The soft brushwork and the greys and pinks show how much he owed to Whistler. The painting is in the collection of the Ulster Museum, Belfast (BELUM.U72).
