The River Dargle at Enniskerry, County Wicklow, in watercolour on paper, by John Henry Campbell.

A thatched cottage sits by the shallow river, a woman in red at its door and children wading at the ford, while the wooded valley climbs to the bare cone of the Sugar Loaf. Campbell paints the Dargle as the picturesque valley visitors came from Dublin to see. The sheet measures about 37 cm across. This work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.

About the Artist

John Henry Campbell (1757–1829) was a Dublin landscape painter who worked mostly in watercolour, recording the edges of the city, Dublin Bay and the Wicklow valleys around the turn of the nineteenth century. His daughter Cecilia Margaret Campbell also became a landscape painter.
