James Barry's The Temptation of Adam (1767–70) as an archival print — the Irish master's answer to Milton, Adam caught in the instant before the fall.

Barry left Cork for Rome at twenty-three, convinced Ireland could produce history painters to rival the old masters — a conviction that eventually got him thrown out of the Royal Academy, and that gives this Adam its scale and moral weight.

One of the most ambitious Irish painters of his age, James Barry (1741–1806) staked his career on grand history painting. The original hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland.

A dark, commanding piece for a study, hallway or living-room feature wall — and a striking gift for anyone drawn to the old masters or Irish art history.
