Harry Clarke's 1919 plate for Poe's The Mystery of Marie Roget — a journey toward the water, printed as an archival art print.
Poe wrote the story as a detective puzzle, his Paris dressed over the real murder of a young New York woman, with Dupin reasoning his way through the newspaper accounts. Clarke illustrates the passage in which the guilty man makes his way to the river: "In his toilsome journey to the water his fears redouble within him." The plate is all dread and no explanation, in line as fine as engraving.
Clarke (1889–1931), the Dublin stained-glass artist, drew twenty-four plates for Harrap's 1919 edition of Poe's Tales of Mystery and Imagination, every one in black and white.
It hangs well in a study, a library or a hallway, anywhere the detail rewards a second look. Made to order, shipped worldwide and backed by hundreds of verified customer reviews.
