Plans of the Towns, Forts and Harbours of Ireland 1748 Map Print

Sixteen Irish towns, forts and harbours share a single sheet in this c.1748 map print — Dublin, Corke, Gallway, Bellfast, Limerick, Waterford, Kilkenny, Drogheda, Londonderry, Coleraine, Carickfergus, Athlone and Kinsale, spelled exactly as the age spelled them. Drogheda's panel doubles as a battle plan of the Boyne with the armies marked in ranks; Kilkenny appears as a walled skyline rather than a street plan; and the star forts of Charlemont and Duncannon sit engraved like paper fortresses. Dublin is still a city without its Georgian squares, and Belfast barely fills its panel — every town on the sheet has its own scale bar and lettered key.

The plate was engraved by Richard William Seale (fl.1732–1775), one of London's busiest map engravers, for Nicolas Tindal's continuation of Rapin's History of England — the standard history on Georgian bookshelves. The original sheet is in the National Gallery of Ireland.
