A woman in a white dress, her hat banded with violet, leans into the load on a donkey's back and works the bundles loose. A child in blue holds the rope. Around them the hillside is gorse and rough grass running to heather, and behind, the Kerry mountains lie low and blue under a pale, heavy sky.
Butler is best known for the garden at Kilmurry, but here she is out on the hills — quick, wet washes, the figures caught in the middle of a job. She was elected an associate of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1896 and a full member in 1937.
