National Gallery of Ireland works we print

Buy Irish Art sells archival prints of forty-one works whose originals are held by the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin. This page lists them plainly: the work as the Gallery catalogues it, who made it, when, what it is made of, how big it is, its accession number, and a link to the print.

Every entry has been checked against the National Gallery of Ireland's own online collection catalogue, and each title links to the Gallery's record for that work. Where the Gallery gives no date for a work, this page gives none either. Where the object is a drawing, a watercolour, an engraving or a lithograph rather than a painting, the medium column says so.

All prints listed here are open edition. There is no numbered run. Each is made to order and shipped worldwide.

Notes on this list

Where the originals are. All forty-one originals belong to the National Gallery of Ireland. Belonging to the collection is not the same as being on the wall: most of any gallery's holdings are in storage at any given time, and works on paper are shown only in rotation because light damages them. Hellelil and Hildebrand, the Meeting on the Turret Stairs is the clearest case — it is watercolour and gouache on paper, kept in a light-protective cabinet, and shown for about two hours a week.

Why some works have no date. The National Gallery of Ireland publishes no date of creation for several of these works, including A Composition – Sea Rhythm, An Abstract Composition, I Have Trodden the Winepress Alone, The Harbour, Leenane, The Four Courts, Dublin, Sketch of Trees and Cliffs at Howth, County Dublin. Rather than estimate, this page leaves those blank.

Attribution. The Gallery attributes its oil portrait of Theobald Wolfe Tone to an unknown Irish artist of the eighteenth century, and hedges the sitter in Thomas Hickey's An Indian Lady with the word "perhaps". Three of the items here are prints after other artists' work: John Martyn engraved Carolan after a painting by Francis Bindon, J. J. Goggins lithographed Wolfe Tone after a copy by Catherine Sampson Tone, and William Read engraved the Robert Emmet trial scene after an unidentified English artist. In those three cases what the Gallery holds is the print, not an original painting.

Copyright. Every artist listed here died more than seventy years ago, so these works are in the public domain in Ireland and the European Union.

What the prints are

Prints are made on 250gsm archival matte paper, acid-free and FSC-certified, or on artist-grade canvas where a canvas edition is listed. Framed options are solid oak or ash with protective glazing, ready to hang. Every print is open edition and made to order, printed at the production hub nearest the delivery address — Ireland, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada or Australia — and shipped free worldwide.
